What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema is a condition characterized by swelling in the arms or legs due to a buildup of lymphatic fluid. This occurs when the lymphatic system, which is responsible for draining fluid from the body's tissues, is not functioning properly.

Causes of Lymphedema:

  • Primary Lymphedema: This is a congenital condition present from birth, often due to a genetic abnormality.
  • Secondary Lymphedema: This type of lymphedema develops later in life, often as a result of:
    • Surgery, such as breast cancer surgery or lymph node removal
    • Radiation therapy
    • Infections
    • Injuries
    • Certain medical conditions, such   as filariasis

Symptoms of Lymphedema:

  • Swelling in the affected limb(s)
  • Feeling of heaviness or tightness
  • Restricted range of motion
  • Pain or discomfort
  • Recurrent infections
  • Hardened skin

How Does Lymphedema Treatment Work?

Our comprehensive treatment plans may include:

  • Physical Therapy: Exercises to strengthen the muscles involved in lymphatic drainage, improve flexibility, and increase range of motion.
  • Manual Lymph Drainage: A specialized massage technique that helps move fluid through the lymphatic system.
  • Compression Therapy: Using bandages or garments to apply gentle pressure and encourage lymphatic drainage.
  • Sequential Pneumatic Compression: A machine that uses intermittent pressure to improve lymphatic flow.
  • Skin Care: Proper skin care is essential for individuals with lymphedema to prevent infections and manage swelling.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Our therapists may recommend lifestyle changes, such as managing your weight, avoiding tight clothing, and elevating the affected limb.
